Conscience
Conscience is what happens when a person holds something that costs
them to hold. burdened by <topic> says a known topic weighs on them,
and the topic must actually be held: without a matching knows <topic>, <source> line in the same block the compiler rejects it with
analysis.burdened-unheld, since being burdened by something you do not
know is an authoring slip rather than a subtlety.
Pressure accumulates into three bands — clear, burdened, breaking.
Bands are read like any other state: rows can condition on when it is breaking, a
goal can go active when it is breaking, and a
manner can shift the
delivery once someone is carrying too much. The band is not a countdown
the author has to drive by hand; it is derived from what the person is
holding and what has been asked of them.
This is where the rest of the model pays off. A principle
(never betrays a confidence) refuses to bend, a temperament decides
which way an unrelated conflict falls, and the cost of keeping both shows
up here — as a band that eventually makes a breaking row reachable. If
you want a character who cracks, do not write the crack as a script;
give them something to carry and a row that only fires once they are
carrying too much.
